Shock: Gusworld prefers dial-up

gus Shock: Gusworld prefers dial upTurns out I was wrong about Angus Kidman, self-professed "excessively well travelled journalist/junket whore".

He uses dialup most of the time when he is overseas if his hotel doesn't have in-room broadband.

I don't know whether that makes me more technologically advanced than Gus or just more of a dopey sucker for paying the ridiculous rates telcos charge for GPRS roaming ($20 per megabyte). I have a sinking feeling that it's the latter.

[Rant] Four and five star hotels that don't offer in-room broadband really don't deserve their star rating in my opinion. It's a pretty basic necessity these days for both business and personal travellers. The least they could do is invite a WiFi hotspot provider in to install in the hotel and offer a bill-share arrangement…[/rant]

Traceroute from a 747

connexion Traceroute from a 747I'm extracting some true geek pleasure out of being on the internet while in a 747-400, 35,000 feet up en route from Heathrow to Singapore thanks to the Boeing Connexion wireless broadband system on the plane. And because I got a special meal, I've already finished it and am taking advantage of the tray table while the guy in front has his seat up for mealtime.

Other poor sods with normal dietary needs are being asked if they'd like the chicken and potatoes or the beef and rice, while I, on the other hand, had a delicious diabetic meal of chicken breast with pesto and fresh strawberries. (I'm not diabetic, but I do genuinely have to eat low glycemic-index foods for medical reasons; it's not just a ploy to get my meal first and free up my tray table.)

Observations of a travelling geek

Angus Kidman would be proud; I've been travelling Singapore, France and the UK for the last few weeks and been giving my 15" Apple PowerBook, Nikon D70 digital SLR camera and Sony Ericsson S700i mobile phone a workout.

I've made some interesting discoveries:

- WiFi hotspots are not all that convenient, especially as they're not always easy to find just by wandering in countries like France. They're often painfully expensive too – I paid 16 euros for 2hrs access (the minimum) at a hotel I was at.

jiwire200 Observations of a travelling geek – The JiWire WiFi finder widget for OS X 10.4 (Tiger) is exceptionally useful. I attracted many strange looks as I walked down Boulevarde Saint Germaine in Paris with my PowerBook open looking for shops that offered *cough* free WiFi access. (Some genuinely free; some free if you bought a coffee; others just *cough* free). It also provides some very useful info that OS X doesn't offer like the signal strength for all access points within range to help you pick the best one or move closer to the AP.
