Don't worry, I don't find it offensive at all... Actually, you caught a podcast of the relatively few times that I've dribbled on a bit before getting into the news, I was attempting to address some of the "where are you?" emails that I tend to get when life gets in the way and a podcast doesn't go out when expected... more often than not, I get into the news considerably faster than that...

Anyway, in response to some of the other comments here, no, I'm not a professsional broadcaster, I'm a guy who likes to tinker with audio, and has an interest in Linux, so I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone by doing a podcast of said subject. This is a hobby. Don't expect mainstream broadcast production values here, or if that's what you're expecting, then save yourself some time and please go listen to mainstream broadcasts (podcasting by the way tends to be a bit anti-mainstream media, so expecting broadcast production values out of a podcast is a little like expecting a fish to start breathing out of water... good audio quality counts, but at the end of the day, it's your content that matters, and I've yet to meet another podcast that provides the content I do relating to Linux).

The only Linux podcast I listen to is LugRadio. Funny as hell, and they have great interviews with developers from the open source community.

Although I honestly can't be bothered looking for podcasts - I agree with your sentiments. If people want to get their stuff out there, I suggest they polish their skills a little before putting their shows out for others to view/listen.

There's a reason that people listen to the ABC, Triple J etc...., the broadcasts are well done. & I agree with the previous comment about Dr Karl - imagine how well we'd all have done at science had someone interesting been teaching the class.

I really like Dr Karl's podcast, it's a good dose of healthy science every now against amongst the ever-present airy-fairy nonsense that usually occupies my life. The Shebang (MMM) podcast is also good -- I love that radio show, and I so rarely get to hear it that sometimes it's nice to get it on the iPod.

I tend to agree with you, though, Dan. The self-made podcasts seem, for the moment at least, to be rubbish. Hopefully, like blogs, podcast creators will start to get some high-quality content, and then become as mainstream as we consider blogs today.

Agreed! I've also been getting into podcasts since I resumed my fitness regime -- they're a very efficient way to pass the time while walking or jogging, be it on the road or a treadmill -- but am astounded at how truly awful and amateurish so many of them are. Likewise, I've given up on podcasts that simply waffle on aimlessly for the first few minutes. How can people surrounded by TV and radio newscasts be so ignorant of the basics, such as an intro spiel that summarises the 'top stories' of the podcast and thus gives the listener a reason to keep listening? So many podcasts remind me of the worst of the early days of Web page authoring, digital video and desktop publishing.
